BLURB
F.Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby brilliantly captures the disillusion of a society obsessed with wealth and status. Young, handsome and fabulously rich, Jay Gatsby appears to have it all, yet he yearns for the one thing that will always be out of his reach, the absence of which renders his life of glittering parties and bright young things ultimately hollow. Gatsby’s tragic pursuit of his dream is often cited as the Great American Novel.
Book Review:
Okay. This is gonna be an honest review with full of rants.
When I got this book, it’s not the first time that I’ve heard of it. I even know that it already has its movie adaptation. But I’m just not a fan of classic novels that’s why I didn’t try reading it which is a very huge mistake! Because this book is just so good!
At first it was a boring read. It didn’t have the action and the thrill that I’ve been looking for every time I read a book. But with patience and the slow progress, I finally enjoyed the story. I didn’t understand the synopsis of this book and I didn’t really know any background about it. So I asked some friends of mine what they know about The Great Gatsby. Fortunately, one of my close friends said that it’s a very good story. He even narrated the movie adaptation of this book to me and he kept encouraging me to read it or watch the movie. And I did with so much patience. I didn’t know how long I’ve read the book but I’m pretty sure that it’s my slowest read ever.
I get to appreciate the story when it reveal who is Gatsby and what is his real purpose. I fell in love with Gatsby the moment I knew that he loved Daisy for five years and how he work so hard to be what he is to have her back. He’s a hardworking man and he always knew the future he have before him. He’s really indeed great.
Daisy, on the other hand, is a different story. Yes she’s beautiful, being called the ‘Golden Girl’ is something. Sure she loved Gatsby as well but that didn’t stop me from hating her. I hated her the moment she drove Gatsby’s car and made a huge accident. She’s selfish and a bitch! Well, not really but that’s what she is to me. I hated her because she’s selfish and I don’t think she really did love Gatsby. I hate her because when Gatsby died, she didn’t even sent him flowers or just simply mourn to his death. She went away with Tom! How could she do that? She didn’t even pay for her mistake! She’s–
I could go all day ranting about how I hate Daisy but I don’t have all day so I’ll just stop right there.
Now let’s go to Tom. He’s a big ass hypocrite. There. I cuss again. Because he really is. He has a mistress and even though Daisy confronted him with it he didn’t stop seeing his bitch. He kept cheating on Daisy but when she was the one having an affair with Gatsby, he immediately remark them. I don’t like him either.
Nick was right about Daisy and Tom. They are careless people. And when they get in a mess, they’ll leave that mess and let other people clean it for them. Just because they have money doesn’t mean they can escape the mistakes they did. After what they did to Gatsby, they just left and went somewhere.
Jordan is okay. Her character in the book is like a decoration. A someone that needs to carry out the message and the purpose of Gatsby towards Nick. And even though she had a fiancé on the last part of the book and Nick and her didn’t have a happy ever after, I couldn’t blame her. Nick did shut her down.
For me, the whole story of The Great Gatsby is how lonely Gatsby is. When he died, the people give all the blame to Gatsby. They accused him of things he didn’t do. He didn’t do anything wrong. All he did was love and protect Daisy. What he had in return is just the opposite. He died because he protected the woman he loved. And when he died, no one remembered him. No one attended his funeral. No one except Nick and his father and Mr. Owl-eye. Considering that when Gatsby was still alive, his house is always packed with people to party and experience his hospitality.
I didn’t expect to write a book review about this. When I first read it, I thought I’m never gonna have the book hangover I’m experiencing right now. But I did and it’s the only thing I’m thinking ever since I finished reading it. For how long will I suffer this book hangover, I don’t know. I’m just hoping that The Great Gatsby has a second book which is I know is impossible right now.
I will forever remember the tragic story of Mr. James Gatz also known as Jay Gatsby.
